Would it be like a sorority? I dont want to live in a sorority. But MIT sororities arent like other sororities? But large groups of women are still scary? WHAT IF THEY DONT LIKE ME? AND THEY TALK BEHIND MY BACK?? At this point, Im basically freaking out because my whole Random Hall Clam single room plan was botched. Move In Day I arrived to Cambridge on August 19th, but didnt actually move in to Random until August 20th. My mom and I had Lyfted to Random Hall with my two unbelievably heavy and overpacked 50-pound bags, which seemed fine, until I remembered that Random Hall has no elevators. Luckily, the move in committee was sitting outside Random to help me move my bags in. I entered on the 290 side, where I got my room key from the desk at Foo and was led by Mark, a graduate student tutor (GRT), to my room. Navigating Random at first was difficult. Random Hall has two sides. 290 and 282. Only the first and third floors are connected so if you want to go from Loop (second floor on the 282 side) to Black Hole (second floor on the 290 side), you either have to go up to the third floor, around and come back down, go to the first floor and do the same process, or go to the basement and roofdeck and do the same. Mark led me up to BMF (on the third floor) and we walked through a narrow corridor to get to Clam, from where we descended down the stairs and entered kitchen-side to Loop, where lo and behold, was my room. I tentatively entered, unsure whether Mariia was inside or not. She arrived a couple days prior to me due to international student orientation happening on August 15th. Luckily, the room was empty. I saw she had claimed the first bunk and a bookshelf and desk for herself. I began to unpack. A couple hours later I didnt actually run into Mariia until I took my friends (the same ones from the CPW!! yes! I kept my friend group!! Its possible!!) to the Random Hall Roofdeck Movie Marathon. The movie had already started so I had to awkwardly Naruto-run across the roofdeck to try and not impair anyones vision, when I heard a whispered Cami!! And I turned and saw Mariia, who I recognized because of Facebook stalking but also because we exchanged a couple of friendly emails. We unfortunately didnt talk, but it was nice to put a voice to the face. The first two weeks (FPOP + REX) My roommate and floor woes were eased when upperclassmen explained the rooming process to me. Rooms given to the frosh were only  temporary rooms. A couple days before official room assignment day are given to us to explore more of the floors and figure things about. Then, we would fill out a google form and would be matched with a room. Having never cooked for myself before or ever done laundry before, I was very, very nervous. I was living off of food from my FPOP, Discover Product Design, which provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entirety of the week-long program. (Shout out DPD, I should probably do a blogpost on FPOPs eventually.) This is also the place where I befriended Aiden, who would eventually become one of my closest friends here at MIT. I held fun, but brief, conversations with Mariia trying to get to know her a bit because I was intimidated out of my  mind by her in the first week. She was a super duper cool international student from Ukraine with an interest in energy, sustainability, and mechanical engineering. She usually arrived back to the dorm in the wee early hours of the morning so I didnt really see her around much. But we then started to talk more and more and I realized that she was not scary at all. I mean, she was scarily smart and talented, but in terms of actual personality, she was one of the nicest people Ive ever had the pleasure of befriending. I realized that having a roommatewasnt all that bad. Ill spare you the details of friendship development and the raising of our little green friendship bar like in the Sims, but we ultimately decided that we loved our room and we loved each other and we wanted to stay in the same room. At this point, I had already explored the other floors and didnt really feel the need to move around. Funnily enough, Loop seemed to best fit my personality and wants in a living space perfectly. Loop is a party floor Historically, Loop is known as the quiet floor in Random Hall. Quiet hours were around 10pm, as most of the floor was asleep by 11pm. Floor culture consisted of tea drinking and crocheting and Loop rarely had any non-Loop residents on the floor aside from the typical cat tourism. It was overall a very wholesome experience. Until five frosh moved onto the  floor. Okay, so Im not saying Im  proud of this but I will say Im  pleased because us frosh have literally slowly, but surely, changed the culture on Loop. Average sleep time changed from 10pm to somewhere between 12am and 3am. We (respectfully) play music on speakers from time to time. Mariia and I often brought our friends over to hang out and pset. If I had a dollar for every time an upperclassman has told me It was  not like this last year. Well, I could probably buy myself multiple one-dollar candy bars. Regardless, it was somewhat gratifying to see how us frosh do have some power to alter the culture of a floor. Of course, we still abide to rules and Loop is still the neatest and cleanliest floor in all of Random, if not the entire campus. I jokingly refer to Loop culture as holesome, where we still maintain some semblance of good wholesome activities but when those late night hour hits its all over for Loop and us five frosh (mainly me, Aiden, Caroline, and Mariia. Melissa and Thao are the good frosh. And I know you might be saying: But wait Cami! Thats six frosh you just named? And one of them is a guy? Isnt Loop an all girls floor? Just wait til the next section, buddy.) My double becomes a triple My friend group is heavily scattered across campus. Aiden lived in Next, Aidan lives in Simmons, Emma lives in BC, and well, Raymonds just in Destiny (the first floor in Random on the 282 side.) They would all often visit Random at least 3-4 times a week, with us switching off to spend time in either Simmons or BC accordingly. But it got to the point where Aiden, who lives the farthest away, would stay the latest at Random. At first, we just told him to crash here and sleep on the lounge sofas or kitchen sofas. Sure, thats fine. After repeating this two more times, one of the upperclassmen came to me and told me that he should probably sleep in a room, as to not scare the floor residents when they seem a random man repeatedly sleeping on their sofas. So, Mariia and I inflated one of the two air mattresses we received (for free from hosting two people at HackMIT!!!) and told Aiden, This is your Home. At that point, Aiden practically lived here. He had spent more time on Random than he had ever spent in Next. He repeatedly cooked meals for the floor, jokingly deeming himself The Loop Meal Plan. Floor residents tended to him and Loved him and appreciated him. He was even added to the Snoop 2019-2020 group chat, after being given cabinet and fridge space. He soon gained the title of Resident Male on Loop, a title previously held by Mike (someone before us froshes time.) Snoop became a thing because Emily decided to start putting Sn at the beginning of every word ever which is why we are now Snoop. There is also a snoop snailing snist and if you are ever on Snoop, you will find instances of this Sn language everywhere. Snits snuirky. (Its quirky.) Eventually, there became an opportunity for Snaiden to switch into Random permanently, and so Snaiden now happily sleeps on Black Hole, but he still Lives in Snoop, cooking, cleaning, and studying here. In fact, Snariia and I still have his air mattress inflated not only because we miss our son, but because he sometimes just crashes here in general. Our room has been a triple, quad, and even quint throughout the semester, and honestly? I wouldnt have it any other way. The Present This blogpost has been in my drafts for a little under two months. Words cannot describe how much I love and appreciate Loop, but Ill really try my best. Im sitting at my first home in California for Thanksgiving break and all Ive been able to think about is how much I miss Random Hall. I miss walking out of my double to be greeted by Tafsia and Nadia sitting at the kitchen table, bantering and laughing and teasing. I miss the smell of Thaos heavenly cooking that wafts through kitchen side every morning and evening. I miss being greeted by Miss Devil Cat Zella and having her wildly run around kitchen to get rid of her zoomies. I miss Michaye leading her cult of Crocheters, as they sit in lounge furiously crocheting with The Mandalorian playing in the background. I did not expect to end up here at all. I did not expect Loop to literally house all of my friends. I did not expect to grow so attached to a place so quickly. Even now, surrounded by my family by blood and the TV blaring this Ohio State Michigan game, I cant help but think of my family back at MIT, who are probably either at the Z or sitting in kitchen crocheting Secret Santa gifts for each other. I dont know when this turned into a love letter to literally all of Loop but if one of you all happen to read this: Living on Loop has changed my life. And I know I say that about a lot of things here, but the MIT experience is very lifechanging! I arrived as a scared, nervous frosh that was accepted and adopted by this great community of strong and intelligent women. Theyve all helped me in one way or another, whether its helping me choose what classes to take, giving me some Big Hard Live Advice at 2 in the morning, or even just showing me how to use the dishwasher. I think overall its clear to say that our expectations are much different than the reality. When I was first accepted to MIT, I thought Id live in a pretty single in EC. Then I thought Id live in a cramped triple in Next. Even after I got into Random, I was determined to live on a single in Clam. And now Im here, on Loop, a floor that I love. The best part of Random Hall is not our roofdeck, or our numerous amount of fridges, or our plethora of signs and murals. The best part, for me at least, is knowing that at the end of the day I get to walk down Mass Ave, past Saloniki, past Beantown, past MIT Museum, and turn to an unassuming stack of doughnuts, enter those doors, and walk into a home. If youve never considered or even looked at Random before, I suggest you do. It could end up being the perfect place for you. I know it is for me. I know it may sound cliche, but it could save your life or from you doing something youd regret. If youve witnessed or experience violence of any kind could build stress in you which could lead to mental problems such as depression, anxiety or even ( PTSD) which could stay with you the rest of your life. WHERE SCHOOL VIOLENCE MAY OCCUR On school property School violence is a very serious matter and should not be joked around about because it could happen to any school at any time no matter how safe the school says to be. I have a story to tell about school violence. Growing up in high school my father who grew up and went to to school in Brooklyn, New York there were fights all- most every day. My dad was on the football team, and two of his teammates got in to an heated argument, and the guy got stabbed right in his neck. I will never forget that story my dad told me. From that day on the school had installed metal detecters. Growing up my dad had it a little rough people would break into his locker, and rob his stuff. My father even told me a time he almost actually almost lost his life on school property he got robbed once at gunpoint a student put a weapon to his chest, and told him give me everything he had. He never saw the kid again. You would think times have changed, but they really have not. Other areas are also brought into consideration when striving to provide the ultimate customer service experience, such things as providing cheap air travel in contrast to its leading competitors to an array of destinations of desire. Southwest does excel in providing cost efficient travel rates, as well as an abundance of destinations. However like any organization there has been some conflict that has arisen from benefit of the company’s bottom line figure in generating revenue, with costing the company their customer service values. As any past air passenger may be aware of airlines tend to overbook their flights, but in the end the passenger that is bumped from their scheduled flight is compensated in another way. In 2009 Southwest abused the rule of overbooking flights and bumping there passengers and had to pay a substantial fine for doing so. Thirteen Thousand Passengers were bumped from their original flights through southwest in 2009, and were not properly informed or compensated for their inconvenience. Somewhere down the lines of communication something was missed, causing the company a fine, as well as a sour taste in customer service in those thirteen thousand passengers mouth. All it takes is for one bad experience to cost the company its credibility. If the organizations stated values which are embedded in a company’s mission statement, and what the company actually does differ, the perception of the organization tends to become unclear, and untrustworthy. A company can say they provide the best customer service, however if they are overbooking flights, not maintaining their flight equipment, and the customer has a bad experience what is one to think. An organization such as southwest has many different groups within that are responsible for different aspects of the company. It is always good to have different people from within a company that are from different areas of the organizat ion. They all have a different point of view on things as well as come from an array of backgrounds. In a diverse atmosphere conflict will arise, however if the proper steps are followed conflict can be resolved and it could benefit the organization all around. The common perception of teenagers today is soiled by images of alcohol, drugs, hoodies, crime, disobedience, violence and unintelligence. Most teenagers would counter this with outrage and blame these demeaning interpretations on a small minority and stereotyping in the media; but I am here to say that we bring it upon ourselves to have such a reputation. I wish I could say I was proud of my generation, but let’s face it: the media aren’t far wrong. Get with the times, I’m not hurting anyone!† we plea, as an excuse to act like slobs and walk around in vests eating pasties in the streets before throwing the wrapping on the floor and wiping our hands on our thighs. Not only is there a decline in manner, but there is a decline in language. It pains me to watch the Americanisation of British English slowly materialise, and this is more prominent than ever amongst teenagers. Every sentence is littered with the word â€Å"like†, and words such as â€Å"whatever† and â€Å"dunno† are common responses. Swearing and slang is used to show some sort of rebellion against manner or social inclusion amongst friends†¦ or should I say â€Å"mates†. And now – with the increased reliance on mobile phones – text speak is diseasing the English language with its pointless abbreviations. TBH, IDK what’s wrong with speaking properly. Another embarrassing element of teenage culture is the underage consumption of alcohol, which is now a growing problem amongst teenagers. Flashback 20 years ago and teenagers would be lucky to have a sip of eggnog during Christmas; now, we’re out â€Å"on the lash† almost every weekend. Going out with the general motive of â€Å"having a laugh†, stumbling past careless doormen into dingy clubs, awkwardly mingling with people twice their age, and eventually passing out at 4AM without any care or dignity about them and a little nudge towards liver disease. But why is there the need to drink underage? The fact is that as teenagers, we are resistant to accept our adolescence, we all strive for maturity, all we want is to fit in with the grown-ups. We try and convert our undeveloped minds to fit that of an adult’s by indulging in such substances as coffee, alcohol and maybe (for the extra-mature kids) drugs. We buy lottery tickets the second we turn 16, learn to drive the second we turn 17, and get plastered the second we turn 18. Oh, how mature. While the teenagers race towards maturity, the parents try their hands at being young and hip just once, and are slated beyond belief. We speedily climb the ladder of maturity, whilst our parents wait at the top fuelling us with food, money and too much damn freedom. Aside from acting mature, teenagers have other means of flaunting their independence, such as fashion. A teenager’s sense of fashion is something which often confuses the older generation, and no wonder. Teenagers are now walking around with gaping holes in their ear lobes, absurd hair colours and pieces of metal skewered through their face, it’s like we’ve regressed to the days of the freak show. The reason for this is that we see fashion as a way of self-expression, it’s a contest to see who can have the most unique look, and this often leads to a rather outlandish outcome. However, this is no excuse for wearing sunglasses and caps indoors or girls caking their faces in make-up and wearing revealing outfits. The current state of fashion is a gargantuan mess: people trying to stand out and people trying to fit in with those who stand out; that is the general idea. And the result: a cacophony of cries for attention. Something that is corresponding amidst most teenagers is the constant need to complain, it’s almost as if we enjoy it. Even if we were living the perfect life, we’d probably whine about how it’s â€Å"too perfect†. Facebook is used as a platform for voicing such dire grievances as â€Å"EASTENDERS CANSELLD 4 THA FOOTIE! OMG!† or â€Å"ME MAM BURNT ME CHIKEN NUGETS!† – freedom of speech at its best. Money is an aspect which often spurs complaints: we complain about our lack of money, so we get a job and complain about how bad that is, then we earn money and spend it on trivial things. Then the cycle repeats, over and over and over. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with us complaining, I mean, it’s not like there are people worse off or anything. It’s not easy wielding such a pretentious outlook at my age, it’s a constant struggle, withstanding the strain of influence inflicted by fellow teenagers. Alas, few are those who choose a country walk over a pub crawl, Tchaikovsky over Tupac, broadsheets over booze. â€Å"Stuff the rules, we just wanna have fun!† Will a game of chess and some homemade shortbread entice you? Shakespeares presentation of Shylock in the Merchant of Venice Essay In the Merchant of Venice, Shylock is presented in many forms. The first question one must ask is whether the play is Anti-Septic or not. This enables us to see how accurate Shylocks portrayal is. In my opinion the play is not. Shakespeare displays Shylock in both positive and negative ways. In turn, during the play we are able to sympathise with Shylock and to fear him. At the end of the play we are horrified with Shylocks behaviour but can easily understand his way of thinking. This is because throughout the whole play he is abused in various ways. This is why when he does this horrific act; he is seeking revenge rather than pleasure. The play is mostly done to show the Christian prejudice at Shakespeares time. It shows the malice and hate aimed at Jews, and gives us many examples of their mistreatment. At the time of Shakespeare Jews were stereotypicalised and a certain view was upheld about them. This meant that anyone who was Jewish was automatically selfish and somewhat improper. Shakespeare wanted to exhibit this prejudice and wanted, in my opinion, for us to sympathise with him. Unfortunately, he was not able to do this entirely due to his audience at the time. In Shakespearean times, people were far more prejudice than the people of today. Unlike us, they did not know about the dangers of it and its potentially catastrophic results. You only have to look at the holocaust to see how damaging it can be. In this nearly six million Jews were killed because of this prejudice towards Jews. With this knowledge we can therefore sympathise with Shylock and see the faults within the Venetian behaviour. But, the Shakespearean people did not see this. They disliked Shylock for he was a Jew and found pleasure when Shylock was abused in the play and hated him more when he did mistakes and his terrible deeds. For this reason Shakespeare was compelled to make Shylock a malevolent character and Characters like Antonio and Portia seem on the side of good. If he hadnt though there would of certainly have been riots in the theatre and Shakespeare would have been in danger of losing his respect and many fans. If he had shown the prejudice more, it is very possible that he could have been accused of being a Jew himself. First one must look at the prejudice towards Shylock in the Merchant of Venice. One can find it very easy to pity Shylock and maybe even start to like him. This is due to the amount of unnecessary abuse directed towards him. Throughout his whole life I feel that he has not done much wrong. If you look at him closely you will see that maybe his only fault is his love for money. But, if you look more closely you will see that even this, is done for a purpose. Shylock is an extremely religious man. A person that basically lives his life on how his religion tells him to. With this, Shylock applies all his actions due to what it says in the Torah and his holy books. Therefore, when it quotes in the Old Testament your wealth is a sign of your goodness, Shylock applies this. He makes his ambition to stay wealthy for it means he is in the favour of God. Shylock therefore is very dedicated to staying wealthy and increasing his wealth. This gives the Venetians a reason to dislike him, when really in my opinion they mostly hate him for the religion he obtains. Now let us look at some examples of this prejudice. When Antonio goes to Shylock in search of money him and Antonio are very offensive to him. Shylock is discussing whether he should give the money or not and Bassanio suggests they talk over it during dinner. One might think this is a harmless or even generous gesture nut it is far from it. With Shylocks vast experience with prejudice, he recognises that they will insult him if he eats with them and offend them. He identifies that they will eat pork in front of him which is a meat forbidden to the Jews. He calls pigs, the meat of the devil and if he was to eat with them they would be sure to make malicious jokes and laugh at him. To smell pork; to eat of the habitation which your prophet the Nazarite conjured the devil into. Then Antonio enters the room and Shylocks understandable hate towards the Christians becomes apparent. He has been so insulted and wounded by the Christian society that now he has completely given up on them and is prejudice towards them. I hate him for he is Christian. He goes on further bringing forward the hate shown to him by Antonio. He recognises how Antonio hates him and all Jews. He hates our sacred nation. Prejudice like this causes us to sympathise with Shylock. It also gives us a sense that maybe he is hated for being Jewish rather than for his personality. After further talking between Shylock and Bassanio, Shylock comes up with a speech, which causes you to sympathise with him. He says how Antonio has always abused and insulted him, calling him names like cut throat dog. Shylock speaks of how Antonio has scolded him towards his money dealings and how he has always put up with it. Then, he finishes off by saying; with all these courtesies Ill lend you thus moneys. This sums up how Shylock has been treated, and how he has been treated so badly. Antonio insults him yet wants Shylock to be kind and generous to him. Antonios following speech solidifies how he has mistreated Shylock and increases our commiseration towards him. One would expect a man to deny such accusations from Shylock or at least apologise for his actions but Antonio does not. Instead, he admits to his actions and goes on further to say that he will do it again. I am as like to call thee again, to spit on thee again, to spurn thee too. This statement forces you in a way to feel for Shylock. This next section, in my opinion, produces a large amount of sympathy towards Shylock. Jessica betrays shylock and runs away from home to marry a Christian. This hurts Shylock in two ways. The first is that she betrayed his trust and the second, that she betrayed her religion. Perfectly Imperfect: The Shakespeare Story EssayDuring the trial, Shylock is continually asked to be merciful and take the money. The duke tells him to sympathise with Antonio. Pluck commiseration of his state. In actual fact, if you were to be in Shylocks shoes, is it possible to sympathise with Antonio, your mortal enemy who has and always will mock you? Even beforehand, Antonio realises there is no point in reasoning with Shylock as he recognises the pain he has caused Shylock to suffer. Furthermore, I think Antonio sub-consciously knows he deserves what Shylock wants to do to him. Moreover, despite this, I think this is the point that some may find hard to stay sympathetic towards Shylock. His desire for revenge becomes too great and it becomes difficult to see a person within Shylock. This is no to say though that you cannot. If you were to take my opinion towards Shylock I would say that he has been taunted and hurt so many times by the Christians that he has become psychologically broken. As he has not been able to let out all his emotions, over the years his hate has expanded up to a point where now he has become a monster. A monster created by the Christians and not by Shylock himself. During the court he repeats five times Ill have my bond. It is obvious from this example that he is a mentally wounded man, driven by hate and anger. So from this, I find it very easy to understand his malevolence but less to sympathise with it. An Elizabethan audience would have been horrified at his behaviour and Shylock would have definitely been thought of as spiteful but once one has learnt to understand a person, you can get a better view of them. Hypocrisy, I think is the big issue here. Whilst Shylock is preparing to take his pound of flesh, they ask for mercy many times and call him a wolf. They even insult him while pleading for mercy. This is quite ironic. Launcelot claims that if there were more Jews converting to Christianity, the price of pork would increase, as more people would be able to eat pork. Shylock is asked why he wont be merciful and he answers it with a question of his own. He asks the Christians why they have slaves and treat them as asses. When they do he says, he does not tell them not to or ask why. He tells the Christians why should he be merciful, when they are not. When there seems to be no hope, suddenly Portia enters the room dressed as a man to replace the defence lawyer. She explains how mercy is a positive virtue and if God was not merciful no one would enter heaven as we are all sinners. Still Shylock refuses to be merciful and asks for his bond again. Bassanio asks her if they may change the law claiming little wrong can do much right. Portia refuses to do this though. Instead she offers thrice the money to Shylock more than once but he refuses it still. Quite a lot of Sympathy for Shylock is lost at this point and more so when he refuses to let a surgeon stand by, meaning he would like Antonio to die. This is a very sinister act. His joy does not make help with his sympathy either as Portia announces he may cut the flesh. Most learned judge! A sentence! Come, prepare! As he is about to cut the flesh though Portia then states one last thing. She tells Shylock that the bond contains no jot of blood. Therefore if Shylock were to spill a drop of blood all his land and goods would be confiscated. She reads from the Venetian script and reads out that if thou shed one drop of Christian blood he will be punished. Here the law is being used against him, as he is a Jew. The law even states one may not drop a jot of Christian blood, no Jewish. Even the Venetian law is prejudice. The law is weighted with religious bias. It is as if Being Jewish declines one of all ones rights. The law now is being used against Shylock rather than with. He has relied on it throughout the trial but now it is his enemy. He then decides to take the money instead in fear of losing his possessions but Portia tells him he must take the bond. In the end he does not take Antonios flesh or the money but that is not all. The law states that if an outsider were to attempt to kill someone half their possessions would go to the state and the other to the person they attempted to kill. In this situation he is labelled an alien due to his religion. Now is the crucial point. Since the Christians had begged so much for mercy shouldnt they show it now? They do not though and Instead Antonio gives him another choice. It is that half the money should go to Portia and so should the other when he dies. Not only this but he must convert to Christianity. He is forced to take this offer and reaches complete public humiliation. Gratiano even makes him kiss the cross and the broken man has just shattered. One point one must think about though is the amount of mercy the Christians showed. Do you think what they have done is fair or are they just hypocrites? As a conclusion, Shakespeare in my view has put the whole Jewish society in this one man Shylock. He is trying to manifest the idea of Jews being prejudice against. I some places he is unable to do this because of his audience but overall that is the point he is trying to raise.

Each story, poem, or slave narrative can be linked to an oppressive time, when the major character of each piece tried to overcome such hardships. Taking this into consideration, the two characteristics I chose to explore in our assignment are struggle and pride. In many of our readings we were exposed to characters that were dealing with difficulties in their life. However, their perseverance and pride allowed them to overcome the obstacles they fought in daily life. The slave narratives show us an in-depth illustration of pride helping to overcome ones struggle. For years and years we have heard stories about slavery and they are usually all negative, but in excerpts from To My Old Master, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, each of these slaves overcame their struggle and came out on top. In To My Old Master it does seem as if Jourdon Anderson feels as if he owes his master something, but his instinct is not to go back. I would rather stay here and starve and die if it comes to that than have my girls brought to shame by the violence and wickedness of their young masters (Young 16). He and his family have made a better life for themselves. Jourdon has moved his family to another area of the country, his children are in school, his wife is involved with church and he has a decent job.
